Schemes/Proposals

Trade is rather opaque and information on prices, arrivals andother trends are not easily accessible to farmers/growers. The following steps willbe initiated in order to fill this gap:

  • Documenting trade practices
  • Generating information on wholesale prices, arrivals and trends in differentmarkets to benefit both growers and buyers
  • Establishing communication network for speedy collection and disseminationof market data for its efficient and timely utilization
  • Preparing farmer’s advisories and issuing the same for the Benefit of farmerstowards optimizing returns
  • Developing Databases of Cultivators and Cultivars
  • Integrating and mainstreaming of Medicinal Plants through call centresincluding Kisan call centres initiatives of Ministry of Agriculture
  • Putting in place an appropriate pricing regime in respect of produce sourcedfrom wild v/s cultivation in favour of cultivated material so as to encouragecultivation and reduce pressure on the natural resources
  • Streamlining of HS Codes

Proposals on the above lines from reputed agencies having experience in in the field on medicinalplants will be considered in project mode for commissioning studies.

Online Submission of Schedule TA

As per the Drug & Cosmetic Rules 1945 requiring the licensed manufacturing units of Ayurveda, Siddha & Unani drugs to maintain the records of the raw material used in manufacture of their products and to furnish it to the State Drug Licensing Authorities and to the National Medicinal Plants Board (NMPB) or any agency nominated by NMPB for this purpose by the 30th Day of June of the succeeding financial year.

Demand And Supply Position Of Medicinal Plants

India has very strong traditional health care practices that are represented by the classical systems of medicine like Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, and Swa-rigpa on one hand, and by a very diverse area-specific and community-specific folk healthcare practices on the other. The major commonality of the Indian classical and the folk health care traditions is their dependence upon the raw material derived from a large diversity of plant species, which is estimated to be about 6,500.

The first serious attempt at national level to assess the demand and supply of medicinal plants in the country was made by the National Medicinal Plant Board during 2001-02, when it commissioned a study through CERPA to understand annual trade levels of selected 162 medicinal plant species. The NMPB, thereafter in 2006-07 commissioned a national study to assess demand and supply of medicinal plants in India. That study, carried out by FRLHT, for the first time brought various intricacies in the herbal sector to the fore and added to the understanding of the subject related to the diversity of raw drug entities in trade, their botanical correlation, volume of annual trade and supply sources. A total of 1389 botanical entities corresponding to 960 plant species were enlisted under trade in that study.

To assess the current Demand and Supply scenario of medicinal plants, NMPB has extensively served the herbal market of India in collaboration with ICFRE, Dehradun. The estimate of consolidated commercial demand of herbal raw drugs for the year 2014-15 is as follows:

Sr.No. Categories of Consumers Estimated Demand (MT) Basis of Estimates
1 Domestic Herbal Industry 1,95,000 Estimated annual consumption of 8610 registered herbal units based on collation of consumption data of 692 sampled herbal units
2 Exports 1,34,500 Collation of DGCIS data relating to export of commodities during 2014-15
3 Rural Households 1,67,500 Estimated annual consumption based on herbal raw drug consumption by 2450 sampled rural households (15 states)
Total (Consumption) 4,97,000
Average Wastage during Handling 14,910 @3% as assessed during interactions with wild gatherers, traders and managers of herbal units.
Total (Demand) 5,11,910

E-charak: Online Market Place Of Medicinal Plants

NMPB has launched an online portal and mobile application “e-charak” for creation of interaction and trade linkages among various stakeholders’ viz. farmers, collectors, traders, manufactures. The portal and application is acting like a virtual market place for medicinal plants. It has the option to register the users and fill the details about the medicinal plants produce, planting materials, etc. cultivated by farmers or required by traders and drug manufactures. Creation of “e-charak” is a way forward of Digital India Programme.
