Project Title: Phytochemical Evaluatiion & Immunomodulatory activity of some antidiabetic medicinal plants

State:

Plant species: , , ,

Principal Investigator & Organization : Dr. Archana Mehta, Department of Botany, Dr. H.S. Gaur University, Sagar - 470 003

Status:

Summary of Project / Major Outcome /Achievements : Extracts of four medicinal plants Gymnema sylvestre (levaes), Swertia chirayta (aerial part), Tinospora cordifloia (stem) and Aegle marmelos were tested against some pathogenic bacterial and some fungal strains for antimicrobial activity. Methanolic and aqueous extracts of Aegle marmelos leaves revealed significant activity against S. typhe (18.6 and 18.3 at 800 micro gram / ml respectively) while extracts of Tinospora cordifloia did not show any zone of inhibition. Gymnema sylvestre revealed significant activity against E. coli (6 mm at800 micro gram / ml) while methanolic extract of Swertia chirayta showed significant activity against B. subtilis (5 mm at800 micro gram / ml). For antifungal activity, all the extract revealed significant activity in all the concentrations against Cladosporium sp. except Tinospora cordifloia and Gymnema sylvestre. All the extract showed concentration dependent immunosuppressive activity. The results justifies the use of the plants in folk medicine.

Summary of Project / Major Outcome /Achievements : The work comprises inventory and collection the of Medicinal and Aromatic plants followed by documentation of traditional knowledge, crude drug samples collection. About one hundred authentic crude drug samples were collected from tribal areas of Betul, Balaghat, Chhindwara, Amarkantak (Anuppur district) and Seoni districts of Madhya Pradesh. During the survey, it was observed that so many medicinal and aromatic plants are depleting day by day. For example, in arboreal species Boswellia serrata, Wrightia tinctoria, Sterculia urens, Litsea chinensis, Pterocarpus marsupium, Entada pursaetha, Mallotus philippensis and in herbaceous ones Andrographis paniculata, Acorus calamus, Costus speciosus, Chlorophytum spp., Plumbago zeylanica, Uraria picta, Withania somnifera, etc. are facing overexploitation and need in-situ as well as ex-situ conservation. The new ethno-medico traditional information have also been collected with the help of the tribals of the area which they use for curing the diseases prevailing in the area. In this tenure, the germplasm of 100 important medicinal and aromatic plants from these areas were also collected and conserved.
