Project Title: To develop database of less common medicinal plants by way of completion of associated traditional knowledge

State:

Theme:

Plant species:

Principal Investigator & Organization : Dr. Vipin Kumar, National Innovation Foundation, Satellite Complex, Jodhpur Tekra, Premchand Nagar Road, Satellite, Ahmedabad-380015, Gujarat.

Status:

Summary of Project / Major Outcome /Achievements : Extensive field work was conducted to search knowledge experts in local communities remote areas of Assam, Manipur, Tripura, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir. The areas selected in the study are rich in ethnic as well as floristic diversity. A total 721 plant species were collected along with the documentation of their medicinal uses in the format designed for the purpose. The collected herbarium specimens were deposited in Herbarium and Crude Drug Repository of Non-codified plants established in collaboration with ICMR at NIF. The information gathered from the herbal healers was screened for its novelty with the help of patent as well as non- patent literature. The novel herbal practices were selected for validation and value addition. Thirteen documented practices for various ailments have been already taken up for validation in different institutes. After a thorough literature search, NIF filed 22 Patent applications in the name of the knowledge holders/ community representatives. These were documented from far flung areas of Mizoram, Assam and Jammu and Kashmir states. The provisional specifications of these medication/formulations were filed initially and the patent application numbers of all the twenty two were received from the Indian Patent Office. We subsequently filed complete specifications for sixteen applications out of which 5 patent applications have been published and are awaiting examination.

Project Title: Network Research Project on Guggal

State:

Theme:

Plant species:

Principal Investigator & Organization : Dr. Geetha KA, Directorate of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Research (NRCMAP), Boriavi, Anand -387310,

Status:

Summary of Project / Major Outcome /Achievements : Survey of 25 districts of Rajasthan were undertaken to collect clonal materials of Guggal. These were planted in RBD design with four replications each having 8 plants per accessions. Materials from Baran, Bundi, Chittorgarh and Jhalawar showed higher sprouting and rooting. 72 months old plant survival varied from 40.63% (Jalor) & 93.75% (Jaipur & Dousa). Black seeds gave 66% germination as compare to white seeds (2%). In agri- trial effect of fertilizer with respect to no. of branches was highly significant except height and the crown diameter of plant. Interaction of irrigation & fertilizer showed a significant effect. Highest survival % was seen in seed raised plants. Stem cuttings of more than 10 mm always gave better results and July a better season for the growth. Non-destructive gum production was experimented with Ethephon (450mg) treatments, which showed 230gm/ plant gum yield. This method also reduced mortality of plant. For large scale production QPM were developed through tissue culture methods by selecting different ex-plants from healthy mature plants i.e. semi matured nodal segment, immature fruits, leaves etc. These ex-plants were standardized thourgh sterilization using different surfactants. Semi mature nodal ex-plants 2.0-3.0 cm were found more responsive. Bud initiation were enhanced with appropriate combinations of hormones, additives & nutrient media. Well rooted plants were put to in-vitro hardening in Culture room for later transferring these to field conditions. Micro propagation through low cost gelling agent & carbon sources were also studied. Old germplasm at DMAPR was also characterized based on various phonological data’s. A total of 73 (50 from Gujarat and 23 from Rajasthan) accessions were characterized using molecular markers, their DNA isolation done and assessment of genetics relationship conducted by RAPD and ISSR markers. Accession nos. were also given to the genetic stock. Quality of different oleogum resin of Guggal were also studied based and their colour and Guggulsterone-Z.
